A practical guide to unit conversions: factors, rounding, and checks
Use conversion tools more carefully by checking source units, target units, significant digits, and context.

A conversion tool applies a relationship between a source unit and a target unit. It saves time, but it cannot decide whether you selected the intended unit, whether the measurement is exact enough, or whether a value belongs in a higher-stakes calculation.
Name both units before entering a number
Read the source and target labels in full. Similar abbreviations can represent different quantities, and temperature conversions are not handled in the same way as a simple multiply-or-divide relationship.
A useful habit is to say the transformation aloud before pressing convert: for example, ‘I am converting meters to feet,’ not just ‘I am converting 10.’
Keep only the precision your task needs
A calculator can display many decimal places, but not every task requires them. A quick household estimate and an engineering specification have different requirements for rounding and significant figures.
When a number will be reused elsewhere, record the original value and units too. This makes a later check much easier than trying to reconstruct what a bare number means.
Run a quick reasonableness check
Look at the order of magnitude. If a length conversion produces a result that is clearly far too large or too small, revisit the selected units and input before relying on it.
For important work, compare against a second approved reference or the measurement standard required by your organization.
