Writing page titles and descriptions that help people choose the right result

Create descriptive page titles and meta descriptions that accurately explain what a page does for readers and search engines.

A page title and description should help a person decide whether a result is relevant before they click. The goal is clarity: name the task, state the useful outcome, and avoid promising more than the page can deliver.

Lead with the task a visitor is trying to complete

Use the common name of the task or tool in the title when it accurately describes the page. A specific title such as ‘Meter to Foot Converter’ tells a visitor more than a slogan or a vague category label.

Add a meaningful distinction only when it is true, such as ‘browser-based,’ ‘free,’ or ‘with local processing.’

Use the description to explain the practical outcome

A good description adds context rather than repeating the title. It can say what a person will enter, what they will get back, and a relevant limitation or workflow detail.

Avoid a list of repeated search phrases. If the sentence would feel awkward to a person reading it, rewrite it for clarity.

Make the page earn its title

The visible heading, utility, help text, and internal links should all support the promise made in the title. A page that names a conversion should provide that conversion, explain it plainly, and link to related conversions or guidance.

Check titles and descriptions after publishing when the utility changes. Accuracy is more valuable than cosmetic freshness.
