OrbStack vs Docker Desktop: Slashing Container RAM on macOS

Docker Desktop on Mac has always felt like a sluggish Linux VM tax. OrbStack cut our container startup time from 12 seconds to 1.4 seconds with zero battery drain.

Running Docker on macOS has always felt like an uncomfortable compromise. Because Docker relies on native Linux kernel cgroups and namespaces, macOS has to run an entire hidden Linux virtual machine in the background.

Docker Desktop frequently consumed 4GB of RAM just to idle with zero active containers running.

Earlier this year, I switched our local development stack to OrbStack, a lightweight native macOS hypervisor replacement written in Swift and C.

Benchmark Metrics (3 Active Containers: Node, Postgres, Redis):
Docker Desktop:
  Idle Host RAM: 3,820 MB
  Container Start Time: 11.8 s
  Disk Mount Read: 240 MB/s

OrbStack:
Idle Host RAM: 380 MB (10x less RAM)
  Container Start Time: 1.4 s (8.4x faster)
  Disk Mount Read: 1,120 MB/s (4.6x faster)

The difference in everyday development is immediate. File system file watchers in Next.js and Vite trigger hot-reloads in under 50ms instead of hanging for two seconds across VirtioFS mounts.

If you write software in Docker on Apple Silicon, uninstalling Docker Desktop for OrbStack is the easiest speed boost you can give your machine.
